Mixed Media Airmail Art
This workshop focuses on techniques and processes for mixed media with anchor elements being the US Mail; old letters, envelopes, postage stamps, vintage postcards. We will cover creating unique combinations and effects with ephemera that can stand on their own as abstract collage OR become backgrounds for my favorite collage subject, simple songbirds.

This workshop focuses on techniques and processes for mixed media with anchor elements being the US Mail; old letters, envelopes, postage stamps, vintage postcards. We will cover creating unique combinations and effects with ephemera that can stand on their own as abstract collage OR become backgrounds for my favorite collage subject, simple songbirds.
We will be creating four 10x10 pieces that will work together as a series (you will also have four bonus lessons). This series will be a body of mixed media artwork with common themes in US Mail ephemera backgrounds, vintage post marks, size and format, hand made envelopes on the back for bird poems, and bird imagery to re-enforce the travel and flight of letters.
Mixed Media Airmail Art workshop includes pre-recorded video instruction and written feedback. This comprehensive workshop will guide you through the collage process step-by-step utilizing video lessons, pdf handouts, classroom lecture and opportunities to upload your work for feedback from me and your fellow students every week.

How to create US Mail inspired collages by incorporating a subject with your background
How to create a compelling composition that will make the best use of your US Mail background elements
How to transfer a bird drawing with Art Foamies stamps
How to transfer a bird reference photo to the background with graphite transfer paper
How to create an underpainting with vibrant color and successful shading as a roadmap for collage
How to create a watercolor painting as finished artwork
How to paint your own collage papers using the gel plate; one video per technique
How to rip and glue–applying your collage paper in a painterly manner
How to tear with and without white edges
How to keep your pieces perfectly flat without cockling
How to vary your paper brush marks in size and shape
How to sign, varnish, frame, wire, and hang your finished Airmail Art piece
This workshop will publish over 50 instructional pre-recorded videos over the course of nine weeks. You may view (and review) the lessons at your own pace and on your own schedule, all the videos will be available to you for 12 months. I will be commenting on all uploaded samples of work as well as questions in the classroom throughout the duration of the course, August 8th through October 3rd.
At the end of this pre-recorded video course,, you will have the skills and confidence to create several different US Mail inspired works of collage art.
