Learn the basics of collage via ZOOM!

This workshop was developed to help students learn the full collage process step-by-step. We'll start with hand painted paper on the Gel Plate and work our way through underpainting, collage application, finishing touches, and more! Enjoy a LIVE online experience that allows for real-time learning.

In this online virtual setting you will be given one-on-one attention, with the ability to ask questions and be guided when you need that extra artistic push. Elizabeth will share tips and tricks while creating with you and demonstrating the process.

* Your Zoom invite will be sent in a separate email the day before the event.

Week 1 (August 18): Gel Plate Printing for Collage Paper: Learn how to create painterly, rich, layered collage papers with the Gel Press Monoprinting Plate.

Week 2 (Aug 20): Small Apple Exercise: Learn how to render volume of a simple sphere with collage.

Week 3 (Aug 25): Bold Blooms in Collage: Learn how to create an impressionistic, painterly collage, step-by-step.

Week 4 (Aug 27): Simple Songbirds in Collage:Continue to develop collage techniques.

SUPPLIES:

BASIC SUPPLIES

  • Pencil and Eraser for sketching your image

  • Reference Image sized up to fit your substrate on non glossy paper

  • Graphite transfer paper to transfer your photo to the board as a sketch, I prefer this brand

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic Paint Starter Set for underpainting your subject matter and hand-painting your papers. Keep in mind the colors of your flower and your ability to mix color, purchase additional colors of paints accordingly, I suggest starting with 1 oz bottles.

  • Container of Gesso for priming your wood panels and adding white to certain paint colors in order to make them more opaque.

  • Liquitex Gloss Gel Medium this is the collage glue, I use gloss because it keeps the colors more vibrant

  • Canvas Panels economy surface for support, this is mat board covered with pre-primed canvas, NOT stretched canvas. 12x12 or similar size, your choice. Size your reference image to the exact size of your panel. Optional: cradled wood panel

  • Paint Brushes (various sizes and shapes) for painting your bird image and applying glue. Use what you have on hand, I like Princeton Catalyst short handle #8 filbert specifically for glue application.

  • Water container, Paper Towels, Paper Plates or Palette Paper Pad to mix paint on

  • OPTIONAL: Masterson Sta-Wet Palette system, this will save your paints for up to a week or more! AND I use the palette sheets in my collage paper when I’m done mixing on them. I recommend this product highly.
