Creating Collage Paper for Skies in the Landscape

Using Tone-on-Tone Papers for Restful Skies

Today’s Tidbit is a video I created for Gel Press. As a Creative Team Artist with Gel Press I create instructional videos that are published to their YouTube. You can find my videos as well as those by many other great artists on the Gel Press YouTube Channel. You’ll find tons of inspiration and creative concepts there.

This week I’m creating collage papers for skies and how I use one of my own stencil design to give me the effect. The sky is a much lighter blue than you might think and this tone-on-tone technique allows for it to be your smooth and restful space in the composition. I am using Manganese Blue and Titanium white Golden Fluid Acrylics.

I’m using Shuji-Gami rice paper on a roll for this technique. This is my all-time favorite paper for skies because of the way the paper tears so organically for both the blue sky and for creating clouds with natural edges. The translucency of this thinner paper allows the blue underpainting to show through it and give a slight blue hue to the collaged clouds. Because rice paper is highly absorbent, it glues down like a dream. You can find it on my Amazon Shopping Resource Page, link below.
