Sgraffito Scratching on the Gel Plate

My Secret to Complex Gel Prints is Layering.. and Klimt!

I am always looking for more ways to add pattern and texture to my gel prints. Sgraffito is a decorative technique that involves scratching through a surface coating to reveal a contrasting color underneath. The word comes from the Italian word graffito, which means "to scratch". In this video I will show you how to scratch through the surface of paint on your gel plate, add a repeating pattern into the negative spaces, and how to pull the print with a contrasting color which will ultimately be underneath! This technique of sgraffito is often used on pottery, I have many pieces like this in my collection and that inspired me to try it on my gel plate!
