Wash and Splatter Background
The Hope Robin AKA Curious Bird
Today’s Tidbit shows you how I created the background effect for one of my best known pieces. Curious Bird was licensed by Pier 1 Imports for nearly 10 years and was at one time amongst their best-selling wall art.. My DAD used to love to go into the store and tell everyone that I created it, no kidding. I feel like sometimes it’s six degrees of separation between Curious Bird and someone you know! A quick Google search shows that Pier 1 is no longer selling it but there are plenty of knock-offs that are the very same image, but not my artwork. I guess you just have to remember that “imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.” yeah, let’s go with that.
That quote that we all know so well is by Oscar Wilde and the full quote goes like this, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”
Anyway…. This lesson is not only about how to create the background, but also on how to establish a good underpainting as your roadmap for collage. I will bring this collage to completion with a multi-part video series on my Patreon Page.
