Old Art Supplies Offer a New Twist!

Exploring New Possibilities: Soft Pastels on the Gel Plate!

The gel plate is an incredibly versatile tool—it’s not just for acrylic paint! Lately, I’ve been watching artists on YouTube experiment with different mediums, and it inspired me to dig into my own stash and try something new.

Hidden in the back of my supply closet, I found a set of buttery soft pastels just waiting for a fresh purpose. Traditionally, soft pastels can be tricky because they require sealing, and most fixatives tend to dull their vibrant color. But with this gel plate technique, there’s a better way!

By pulling the print with clear gloss gel medium or a fluid acrylic paint, the pastels become encapsulated into the surface—no smudging, no need for fixative, and no loss of color intensity. Best of all, I can use these prints in collage work without worrying about disrupting the delicate pastel layers.

It’s always exciting to breathe new life into old supplies and discover unexpected results. Have you tried using pastels on your gel plate? Give it a go—you might be surprised at what you create!
